Somalia, Turkey leaders reaffirm strategic partnership, bolstering Ankara’s foothold in Horn of Africa

Somali president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdoğan met in Ankara this week to reaffirm their countries’ strategic partnership, focusing on enhanced security cooperation and deepening economic ties.

The leaders discussed a range of initiatives aimed at bolstering infrastructure, trade, and humanitarian aid, emphasizing Turkey’s role as a critical partner in Somalia’s reconstruction. “Turkey has been a steadfast ally in Somalia’s journey toward stability and prosperity,” said president Mohamud, acknowledging Ankara’s ongoing support in rebuilding Somalia’s institutions, particularly in the security and development sectors.

Erdoğan echoed these sentiments, reaffirming Turkey’s commitment to Somalia’s security and offering continued military, technical, and humanitarian assistance, especially in the fight against the militant group Al-Shabaab.

Turkey operates its largest overseas military base in Mogadishu and has significantly contributed to training Somali forces and stabilizing the region. Recent deliveries of advanced Turkish-made drones are expected to enhance Somalia’s counterterrorism efforts. Reports indicate that Somalia is also set to acquire the Turkey-developed T129 ATAK helicopter, marking a significant step in the modernization of its military forces.

In addition to security, the two leaders explored expanding Turkish investments in Somalia’s infrastructure, education, and healthcare, with Turkey already overseeing key projects like the development of Mogadishu’s airport and seaport. These efforts are part of Turkey’s broader strategy to increase its presence and influence in the Horn of Africa.
