Libya elected chair of International Olive Council

Libya has been elected to chair the International Olive Council (IOC), formerly the International Olive Oil Council, for a one-year term.

The election took place during the 120th session of the IOC, held this week in Spain. Libya competed against Uruguay and Israel for the position. Iran, the outgoing chair, had sought an extension of its presidency.

The session, chaired by Javad Mirarab, featured several preparatory meetings, including specialized committee discussions from November 12–14 via videoconference and an Advisory Committee meeting on November 19. This year, World Olive Day celebrations were moved to November 21 to ensure full participation by council representatives.

Libya also achieved significant milestones during the session, receiving accreditation for its sensory and chemical laboratories. This qualification enables Libya to issue internationally recognized export certifications for olive oil. Additionally, the council approved Libya’s proposal to host its next session in Tripoli, further solidifying the country’s role in the global olive sector.

The International Olive Council is an intergovernmental organization representing over 98% of global olive production. Based in Madrid, Spain, the IOC has long been regarded as an independent body dedicated to regulating and promoting the olive and olive oil industry.
