Mauritius reverses social media restrictions after public backlash ahead of elections

Mauritius has withdrawn its controversial decision to restrict social media access during its upcoming general election following widespread public opposition. The proposed ban, which would have affected major platforms including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and X, sparked significant controversy across multiple sectors of society.

The initial restriction was implemented in the island nation in response to a major wiretapping scandal that revealed sensitive conversations, including those of political figures. One particularly concerning leak involved allegations of a police commissioner requesting alterations to an autopsy report in a custody death case.

Government officials had justified the temporary shutdown as necessary to protect national security and electoral integrity, planning to maintain restrictions through the day after the November 10 elections. However, the decision faced immediate resistance from various stakeholders, including opposition parties, media organizations, civil society groups, and businesses.

Critics argued the ban would not only impede democratic processes but also negatively impact economic activities. The restriction particularly concerned media outlets that rely heavily on social platforms for news distribution and public engagement.

Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth has acknowledged the ongoing investigation into the leaked recordings, confirming several arrests in connection with the case. The government’s rapid reversal of the social media ban demonstrates the growing influence of public opinion and the essential role of digital platforms in modern democratic societies.
