Morocco welcomes UNSC resolution on Sahara
Morocco welcomed the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2756, which stressed the need for all four parties to the conflict- including Algeria- to return to the round tables process, while considering the Moroccan autonomy plan as serious and credible.
The resolution extended the mandate of the UN peacekeeping mission MINURSO for another year till October 31, 2025 and urged the cessation of all hostilities to facilitate the resumption of the political process, echoing the Moroccan stance.
The text was adopted with 12 votes and two abstentions while Algeria, a non-permanent member, did not participate in the vote.
“The resolution, adopted today, preserves all Morocco’s achievements, while introducing new important elements for the issue’s future development within the UN,” Morocco’s foreign ministry said in a statement.
The resolution cited Algeria as many times as Morocco as a main party to the conflict and reaffirmed the need to work towards a political solution that can only be realistic, feasible and based on compromise.
In this respect, the resolution highlights the pre-eminence of Morocco’s autonomy plan.
