Mauritania-Senegal: BP announces progress towards imminent exploitation of Ahmeyim Field
Murray Auchincloss, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of British Petroleum (BP), announced Wednesday October 30, significant progress towards the upcoming exploitation of the Ahmeyim liquefied natural gas (LNG) project, situated off the coasts of Mauritania and Senegal.
BP is anticipating the commencement of production and export operations in early 2025, a development that underscores the growing importance of natural gas in the global energy landscape.
In a related effort to advance the project, David Campbell, BP’s Executive Vice President, visited Nouakchott over the past weekend. During his visit, he engaged with key officials from the Mauritanian energy sector to discuss the project’s details and its potential benefits. Following his discussions in Mauritania, Campbell proceeded to Dakar, where he aimed to address and resolve any outstanding differences between the governments of Mauritania and Senegal. His discussions centered on fostering collaboration, highlighting the mutual benefits and substantial opportunities the Ahmeyim LNG project presents for both nations.
The Ahmeyim LNG project is projected to produce approximately 2.5 million tons of LNG annually during its first 20-year phase, which is expected to contribute significantly to the economies of both countries. This project not only promises to enhance energy security in the region but also aligns with global efforts to transition towards cleaner energy sources. By leveraging the vast natural gas reserves in the Ahmeyim field, BP aims to play a pivotal role in meeting the rising demand for LNG in international markets, further establishing the region as a key player in the global energy sector.
