Tunisia: Report reveals more female doctors than male

The Center for Research, Studies, Documentation, and Information on Women (CREDIF) launched on Thursday its first digital publication, Tunisian Women in Figures 2024, a comprehensive scientific document that compiles statistical data from a variety of public institutions and national professional bodies. This report offers a detailed examination of women’s roles and experiences across several sectors, serving as a vital resource for researchers, policymakers, and civil society.

The report reveals significant insights into the health sector, noting that women make up 51% of the total number of medical doctors in Tunisia. As of February 15, 2024, there are 13,197 female doctors in the country, with 6,895 of them practicing in the field of general medicine. This statistic underscores the substantial presence of women in the medical profession, highlighting their contributions to the country’s healthcare system.

Tunisian Women in Figures 2024 also provides a wide array of data, addressing topics from demographics to the lived experiences of women in Tunisia. It explores issues such as violence, health challenges, unemployment, and women’s achievements in areas like medical assistance, education, and leadership roles in teaching. The report shines a light on both the difficulties and the successes women encounter in various professional and personal spheres.

This booklet aims to foster greater awareness and drive effective solutions for gender-related challenges in Tunisia.

In addition to its utility for academic and institutional research, Tunisian Women in Figures 2024 plays a critical role in informing policy-makers on how to improve the lives of women across the country. As Tunisia continues to navigate social and economic reforms, such reports offer a crucial basis for addressing gender inequality and ensuring women’s active participation in all areas of public and professional life.
