Morocco, World Bank set to adopt new cooperation roadmap

Morocco and the World Bank have reaffirmed their shared will to strengthen their cooperation, and called, in this connection, for the acceleration of their partnership through a new joint roadmap

This came during a meeting in Washington between Morocco’s ambassador to the United States, Youssef Amrani, and the president of the international financial institution, Ajay Banga.

The new roadmap would strengthen, better support and enrich the exceptional cooperation between Morocco and the Bretton Woods institution, the two sides underlined.

During the meeting, the World Bank president praised the leadership of King Mohammed VI in economic reforms and social construction, noting that the Kingdom is a model of resilience and crisis management, thanks to targeted and effective government actions.

He pointed out that the World Bank’s new priorities for South countries will be focused in particular on five key job-creating sectors: electrification, infrastructure, health, agribusiness, and tourism.

The WB Chief added that the partnership with Morocco will soon be further strengthened in several priority areas to promote job creation in the private sector, strengthen human capital, and support the fight against climate change.

In addition to these strategic pillars, the Washington-based institution will also focus on cross-cutting issues, including increasing the participation of women in the job market and digital transition, he said.

The WB chief also congratulated Morocco for the excellent arrangements put in place to ensure the success of the Annual Meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, held in Marrakech in October 2023.

The Moroccan diplomat on his part recalled the structural and evolving nature of the Morocco-WB partnership, and underlined that “the various opportunities offered, combined with the long-standing trust that binds us, consolidate our common desire to build stronger and broader convergences together.”

It is about “emulating this ascending dynamic through more ambitious and targeted interaction channels which ensure permanent fluidity to our exchanges at all levels,” he said.

Such a structuring of the partnership provided for by the joint roadmap “constitutes an imperative induced both by our shared vision and by the substantial increase in cooperation projects which link us in various issues, particularly in highly strategic and priority areas for Morocco and its international partners such as education, agriculture, health, water, and energy.”

The Moroccan ambassador underlined in this regard “the crucial role of World Bank operations in the transfer of know-how and expertise, particularly in terms of integrated risk management, inclusive development, and climate issues.”

In this holistic approach, the human dimension is the primary prism through which all considerations, orientations and choices taken for the nation take place, he said.

Mr. Amrani also stressed that the Royal Atlantic Initiative reflects this commitment through which the Kingdom seeks to promote regional spaces of shared prosperity where efficient collaboration and sincere solidarity ensure more inclusive development and security for all.
