AU PSC commends Morocco for facilitating capacity-building programs for African election observers
The Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU) has commended Morocco for facilitating capacity-building programs for African election observers.
The AU PSC “congratulates the Kingdom of Morocco for having facilitated the capacity-building programs for African election observers and calls for the continuation of this support to the AU Commission”, reads a statement issued on Wednesday at the end of the January 24 Council meeting devoted to “the examination of the Report of the Chairperson of the AU Commission on the elections held in Africa from July to December 2023 and the prospects for 2024”.
The PSC encouraged member states to continue strengthening the institutional capacity of national election management bodies and the judiciary, notably through allocating sufficient resources, and to guarantee the independence and professionalism of these institutions.
The PSC also urged the AU Commission to ensure that all support to member states is provided in a timely manner, while strengthening its working relationship with domestic election observer groups to promote initiatives that enable them to better observe electoral processes freely, impartially and responsibly, in accordance with relevant international, continental and regional standards and the national legal framework in force.
