US pledges $11 Million in relief funds to Libya after floods disaster

U.S. President Joe Biden has announced $11 million in humanitarian aid to Libya to support people affected by the storm Daniel which hit the city of Derna and a number of cities in THE eastern part of the oil-rich African country.

The White House said that the State Department and USAID will assist in coordinating aid delivery to the most vulnerable by joining the collaborative efforts of countries and NGOs worldwide providing critical supplies including water, food, shelter, and medical care, Libya Update reports.

Over 11,000 people have been killed by the storm-caused floods. Over 10,000 others are still unaccounted for. Authorities estimate approximately 70% of infrastructure in afflicted areas is damaged. Local and international teams are busy trawling through the town for survivors several days after the storm hit on 10 September.

The parliament-appointed government which controls much of the eastern regions has dismissed all members of the municipal council of the Derna city following protests by survivors of the floods demanding accountability.

Osama Hamad, the head of the Government, made the decision on Monday September 18.
