Netanyahu’s policies botch Abraham accords
The Abraham Accords that were designed to promote Arab-Israeli peace are now in danger due to Netanyahu’s policies and escalation in Palestinian territories.
With the expansion of settlements and repeated provocations of holy Muslim venues in the West Bank, Netanyahu’s cabinet drew condemnations from Arab partners putting the 2020 Abraham accords on a perilous trajectory that could sap all achievements.
Morocco, which resumed ties with Israel in 2020, is yet to upgrade its liaison office in Israel to an embassy in a context marked by an escalation in Israeli killing of Palestinians and undermining prospects for the two-state solution due to the settlement policy.
Morocco has also said a summit, dubbed Negev summit, that brings together Arab signatories of Abraham Accords as well as the US will be postponed till after the summer. Foreign minister Nasser Bourita announced the decision late last month after he condemned Israel’s actions in Palestinian territories.
“The Kingdom considers the Negev Forum to be an ultimate and relevant framework for regional cooperation and dialogue, which can provide positive responses to a number of challenges,” Bourita had said, confirming thus that the Negev summit has been postponed due to unfavorable “political context.”
This week, a new wave of condemnation of Arab states followed the killing by Israel of at least 10 Palestinians in Jenin.
Netanyahu had been pushing to make his first visit to the UAE the very next week, but the Emiratis postponed his visit, according to The Times of Israel.
Netanyahu has also received condemnation for his operation in Jenin from countries like Saudi Arabia which he hopes to bring along the Abraham Accords.
