Zambia, Germany launch €3m program to reduce carbon emission

Zambia and Germany have launched a program worth 3 million euros aiming at reducing carbon emission and promoting sustainable development projects, reports say.

Launched in capital Luzaka, the program is dubbed “Supporting Preparedness for Article 6 Cooperation” or SPAR6C, a program of the International Climate Initiative (IKI).

IKI is an important part of the German government’s international climate finance commitment. The initiative came into being in 2022. SPAR6C undertakes tailored technical assistance and capacity building activities for government decision makers and other national stakeholders which will be shaped through a process of in-depth readiness assessments to help identify the priorities for each country.

Collins Nzovu, Zambia’s Minister of Environment and Green Economy welcomed the program and stressed that it will help the Southern African country to implement ambitious projects that reduce greenhouse gas emission.

“The program will also help Zambia establish the policy and regulatory framework necessary to access the global carbon market, as well as develop and implement carbon-financed projects over a five-year period,” he added.

Zambia is among four countries including Colombia, Pakistan and Thailand that the German government has identified as partners.
