Egypt’s top diplomat elected President of COP27

Sameh Shoukry, Egypt’s Foreign Minister, was elected President of the 27th edition of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) which kicked off in the Red Sea city of Sharm El Sheikh.

Shoukry said in a speech that Egypt will not spare any effort to achieve the goals of the conference and will work to provide all conditions for the success of this important event and to ensure its exit with successful results.

The summit to end November 18, will address many issues including climate change adaptation, mitigation of its negative impacts and means of providing climate funding, casualties and damages caused by climate change.

Least developed countries who pollute the least are demanding developed countries, most responsible for greenhouse emission, to fulfil their previous pledges to provide funding of $100 billion per year as laid out in the Paris Agreements.

The funding is essential in supporting the most climate-vulnerable countries facing heightened threats of food insecurity, water scarcity and diminishing livelihoods.
