UN Security Council highlights Morocco’s pioneering role in resolving Libyan conflict

Morocco’s pioneering role in resolving the Libyan conflict was highlighted by the UN Security Council during a meeting devoted to recent developments in Libya.

UN Secretary-General Special Representative for Libya Abdoulaye Bathily, together with several Security Council members, welcomed the meeting, held in Rabat last Friday, between Chairman of the Libyan High Council of State Khaled Meshri and Speaker of the House of Representative Aguila Saleh.

They further emphasized the importance of the agreements reached in the Rabat meeting, concerning the implementation of provisions related to the positions of sovereignty and executive power unification. In this respect, Bathily voiced his intention to meet with the main leaders of the Libyan House of Representatives and the High Council of State on the basis of the commitment announced last Friday in Rabat, in relation to preparing for the elections, as soon as possible.

The Rabat meeting was commended by several countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Russia, Mexico, Albania and Brazil, who all thanked Morocco for its efforts in resolving the Libyan crisis and saw tangible progress in the Rabat meeting.

The Security Council is expected to adopt a resolution this Friday on the renewal of the mandate of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).

During their Friday meeting in Rabat, Aguila Saleh and Khaled Al-Mishri discussed ways to relaunch dialogue and find a political solution to end their country’s long-running dispute.

The meeting highlighted by agreement to implement the mechanisms adopted by the second round of inter-Libyan dialogue of Bouznika (October 2020) on the posts of sovereignty and unification of executive power.

The mechanisms set criteria for appointments to leadership positions in the state’s sovereign institutions, including the positions of Governor of the Central Bank of Libya, President of the Audit Bureau, and Head of the Administrative Control Authority, among others.

At the end of their Friday meeting, the two Libyan officials recalled Morocco’s commitment to helping Libyans find a peaceful solution to the conflict and emphasized the Kingdom’s support for Libya’s unity and territorial integrity and its firm position against foreign interference in Libyan domestic affairs.

Morocco hosted a series of roundtable talks between Libyan parties in Tangier and Bouznika and repeatedly rejected any foreign interference in Libyan affairs.
