Morocco improves ranking in Global Peace Index

Morocco jumped five places, improving its ranking in the 2022 global peace index into the 74th position.

In the MENA region, Morocco came sixth, preceded only by Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan, the UAE and Oman in the ranking that measures security conditions in 163 countries.

In Africa, Morocco came seventh outperformed by Ghana, Botswana, Zambia, Malawi, Namibia and Rwanda.

Iceland topped the global ranking as the most peaceful country, a position it has held since 2008. It is joined at the top of the Index by New Zealand, Ireland, Denmark and Austria.

For the fifth consecutive year, Afghanistan is the least peaceful country, along Yemen, Syria, Russia and South Sudan.

The index estimates the cost of violence to the global economy at $16.5 trillion, or 10.9% of global GDP.

For the ten countries most affected by violence, the average economic impact was equivalent to 34% of GDP, compared to 3.6% in the countries least affected, the index showed.

Among the key findings is a drop in the scale of terrorism with 70 countries recording no attacks in 2021.
