IFFHS 2019: Tunisia’s LIGUE 1, strongest African football league, Morocco’s Botola second

Tunisia’s top tier football league, League 1, has emerged as the strongest African football league on International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) 2019 global rating.

Officially known as League 1 Tunisienne, the championship, which encompasses 14 teams, is credited with 664.5 points on a period spanning from January to December 2019.

On the global scale, it is rated 15th, up from 30th place on the 2018 ranking.
The Tunisian League 1 has overthrown Morocco’s Botola, which despite losing its African crown, has made progress to sit at 17th place on the global ranking with 629,5 points, up from 27th spot on the 2018 index.

Tunisia was able to dominate the continent after legend Esperance Tunis and Etoile Sportive du Sahel clinched respectively the Confederation of African Football Champions League title and the Arab Clubs Championship.

Egypt’s Premier League is third best league on the African continent with 520.5 points.

The global ranking is topped by the English Premier League. It re-emerged as the strongest after 10 years dominated by Spanish La LIGA.

The performance of Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester City contributed highly to the victory of the English Premier League in the annual Ranking of the Leagues, IFFHS notes.

IFFHS based in Germany introduced the yearly award in 1991. It takes into consideration the performance of the clubs in various international leagues around the world.
