Salvador to open embassy in Morocco after withdrawing recognition of SADR

Democracy brings an end to Polisario recognition in Latin America. All democracies in the region ended the anomaly of recognizing the self-proclaimed Polisario state known as SADR, including Salvador which braces to open an embassy in Rabat.

The announcement was made in Rabat following a visit by Salvador’s Foreign Minister Juana Alexandra Hill Tinoco, who reiterated her country’s stand in support of Morocco’s territorial integrity.

The decision to open a Salvadorian embassy in Rabat came after Salvador’s president Nayib Bukele declared an end to recognition of the Algerian-backed Polisario state last June.

The two countries adopted then a cooperation program for 2019-2022.

The Salvadorian Foreign Minister also expressed support for Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Sahara region.

In the joint statement issued at the end of the Salvadoran official’s working visit to Morocco, Salvador voiced appreciation for the efforts made by King Mohammed VI to guarantee the stability and security of the region, and to promote inter-faith dialogue.

Salvador lauds “the important role of HM King Mohammed VI, Commander of the Faithful, notably his efforts to promote inter-religious dialogue, tolerance and the values of peace,” said the joint statement. The visit to Morocco on March 30-31, 2019 by Pope Francis and the various messages of peace conveyed during the Pope’s official activities “are another proof of the spirit of openness and tolerance of Morocco,” added the statement.

The two countries also expressed their commitment to broaden their collaboration within the framework of South-South cooperation “given that Morocco constitutes a natural bridge between Latin America and the Arab-African world, and Salvador represents a gateway and a platform to Central America,” the joint statement said.
