Tunisia: National carrier to shred 400 jobs

Tunisia’s national carrier, Tunisair, will, in February, cut up to 400 jobs as part of the restructuring plan already in execution, Tunis Webdo reports.

The airline CEO, Ilyes Mnakbi, said the operation is aimed at shedding positions deems superfluous as the airline seeks to ease its financial burden.

The carrier currently employs 8,000 people. It aims to shred 1,200 jobs over three years. The company has reportedly reached an agreement with the country’s powerful workers union, UGTT, to identify the surplus positions.

The revamp plan will cost the airline 170 million Tunisian Dinar.

The decision, approved by the government is yet to be rubber-stamped by the parliament.

Tunisair is facing numerous challenges including debts, poor services, delays and a small fleet. The airline currently operates 29 aircrafts connecting its Tunis hub with 101 other destinations.
