Spanish FM highlights Morocco’s active cooperation in management of migratory flows

Spanish Foreign Minister Arancha González Laya highlighted, on Tuesday in Madrid, Morocco’s active cooperation that enabled her country score “excellent ” results in terms of management of migratory inflow.

“This is a structural phenomenon that requires a comprehensive and integrated management, including responses to illegal inflow and regular migration,” said Arancha González Laya, who was addressing the Council of Arab Ambassadors in Madrid.

Spain has obtained excellent results thanks to active cooperation mainly with Morocco, she said, according to a statement issued by her department.

The Minister also surveyed Spain’s foreign policy towards the Mediterranean and the Arab world, affirming her country’s commitment to continue promoting the opportunities offered by the region and contributing to democratic progress, the statement added.

The future of the Mediterranean, particularly of the southern shore, directly affects the security and stability of Spain and the European Union (EU), Arancha González Laya said, pledging that her country will work to find a political solution to old and new conflicts in the region and to strengthen cooperation in the fight against terrorism.

“For Spain, the relationship with the southern shore of the Mediterranean is of paramount importance, with key challenges to be addressed such as promoting integration and strengthening economic ties, including investment and trade with the Arab world,” said the minister, noting that economic diplomacy will be one of the broad lines of her department’s action.

Spain has repeatedly commended Morocco’s role in the fight against illegal migration and trafficking of human beings and pleaded for increasing European Union’s aid to the North African country, which is exerting tremendous efforts to foil migration attempts from the North African country towards Europe, mainly Spain, which is only 15km away from Northern Morocco.

Actually, the number of migrants reaching Spain dropped significantly thanks to Morocco’s crackdown on migrant trafficking networks.
