AU: Egypt to hand over presidency to South Africa in February

Egypt will pass on the African Union presidency baton to South Africa in February next year, asharq al-Awsat reports.

The handover will take place at the 33rd ordinary summit of the continental body in Addis Ababa.

The meeting slated January 21 to February 10 will gather under the theme: “Silencing the Guns: Creating Conducive Conditions for Africa’s Development”.

President Fattah al-Sisi has led the presidency after taking over from Rwandan leader Paul Kagame last year.

During his tenure, Sisi co-chaired the first ever Russia-Africa summit, held in October in the Russian city of Sochi. He also represented the organization in several international gatherings.

The AU presidency is rotational and only last one year.
