Security Council stresses Algeria’s role in Sahara conflict, backs UN-led talks

Resolution 2494 of the UN Security Council renewing for one year the mandate of the UN mission in the Sahara MINURSO has also reiterated the call on Algeria to contribute to the settlement of the Sahara conflict.

Algeria, which arms, hosts and backs the Polisairo separatist front diplomatically has refused in the last four decades to pull its head out of the sand as it continues to deny any responsibility in the Sahara conflict.

Like its predecessors, resolution 2494 has recognized Algeria as a main party in the process aiming to find a political, realistic, practical and lasting solution to the regional dispute over the Sahara territory.

The new Resolution also welcomed the round table process and called for all parties (Moroco, Algeria, Mauritania and the Polisario) to resume consultations to be convened by the next UN envoy to the region.

The Security Council also welcomed “the commitment of Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and the Polisario to remain engaged throughout the process, in a spirit of realism and compromise, in order to ensure its success”.
