Algeria: Bouteflika to appoint Vice-President to aid in country’s management if elected

President Abdelaziz Bouteflika is planning to appoint a Vice-President to help him rule the country due to his physical inability should he win April presidential elections for a fifth term in office.

The appointment would take place should the Algerian leader win the April election for which he announced his candidacy last week.

Official news agency APS said the 81-year old President hopes to bring amendments to the constitution, without elaborating further.

The 81-year old man had made are public appearance since suffering a stroke in 2013 that affected his mobility and speaking abilities.

Several opposition forces have voiced opposition to his presidential candidacy, citing his critical health condition.
