Moroccan-Algerian Dialogue Conducive to Regional Stability -Mauritanian Government

Mauritania has commended King Mohammed VI’s initiative to open a direct and frank dialogue with Algeria as an initiative that will safeguard regional stability.

“Mauritania encourages and wishes full success to any initiative aiming to guarantee regional stability and security as well as neighborliness,” Spokesperson for the Mauritanian government Sidi Mohamed Ould Maham said.

Algeria’s support for separatism in Morocco’s Sahara has poisoned relations between the two Maghreb heavyweights and hijacked the construction of the Maghreb Union, which also includes Mauritania, Tunisia and Libya.

In a speech on the anniversary of the Green March, the King has made Morocco’s good intentions clear calling on Algeria for dialogue to “settle the transient and objective differences impeding the development of relations between the two countries.”

The Moroccan initiative was met with praise in Africa, Europe and the Arab world as well as the UN as a step mirroring the Kingdom’s good intentions to build a strong Maghreb Union.
